“A personality adaptation is a combination of innate characteristics plus the way a child adjusts his or her behaviour in order to survive physically and/or psychologically and to get along well in his or her family of origin. In our early infancy we feel helpless and anxious, and adapt to our circumstances and environment in order to survive and feel safe. By the time we are around 6 years of age, we have formed a number of adaptations or adjustments to ourselves, which become the building blocks of how we are in the world. These adaptations are not pathological, everyone has them. According to the theory developed by transactional analysts, there are 6 adaptations in total, and we usually form two or three.

In this workshop we will introduce the main aspects of personality adaptations theory, and participants will have the chance to look at their own adaptations, and explore ways they may choose to adopt in order to enhance their functioning in relationships.”

The Course

Often relationship difficulties can be encountered because people relate to each other in different ways. Understanding personality adaptations can help us, both personally and professionally.

The course is a one day course, drawing on many transactional analysis concepts and is useful for all those in the helping professions. Throughout the day the course will gradually build the model, so that by the end of the day attendees will have a set of tools that can be used in a wide range of contexts.

Course Content

    • Injunctions – what are the early messages from our childhood
    • Drivers – how did we learn to cope with those early messages
    • Process Script – how do we live out our script day to day?
    • Using the adaptations for personal or professional understanding

Please note: You need to have completed the TA101 first, as this course require some prior understanding of Transactional Analysis.

Caroline Jany, Studio Day Student

(5/5)

I enjoyed going to Dunamis for a studio day as I meet new colleagues and old ones, I found that Sara and Sally offer a good balance between theory and experiential; a good mix of thinking, reflecting and doing. I wish I could attend to their sessions more often. Highly recommend.
